a journal of staff meals

In South Korea, my staff meals were automatically deducted from my paycheck every month. It came out to around 3000 KRW per meal, which was ridiculous because it was free for the school's 800 students but the 50 teachers and other staff had to pay. Why not just make it free for everyone at that point? That said, 3000 KRW was a very good price and cheaper than eating out, especially because it was self-service and of good quality.

First week on the new job and I had yet to master the art of strategically loading my tray.
I should have put a larger serving of the beef/egg dish in one of the bigger sections.

회식 Staff dinner at an outdoor restaurant - specializing in dog meat.

The principal gives a speech. This is the special table, where all the senior staff members like the principal, vice principal, head teachers etc sit.

We filled up 3 of these sections. I took this photo from the middle section.

Chicken stew. I didn't photograph the dog stew.
Yes, I did eat both. Dog stew tastes like lamb.

Build your own bibimbap.
If you arrived late to the last lunch session, the main stuff such as the tofu pieces might be gone.

Sometimes there wasn't enough space for everything.

I then figured out that there was nothing stopping you from placing food on the spaces between the bowls, like this apple.

Or, kimchi could share space with the rice.

A mini 회식 with a coworker

I really liked the days when we would get bottles of milk
because I'd bring that home for use in my coffee/tea.

Mini 회식 with the other people in my department.

회식 with all staff.
This happened about once a month, maybe even more if there were special events.

Cooking the garlic

Some days there would be an empty section, again because of bad strategy on my part.

Excellent strategy. Sauce and rice together, a space for the snack, and a sizable amount of tofu.

I was asked why I didn't want to have spaghetti as my main dish.
It didn't go with the rest of the food. Also, it's messy.

Lots of food here, but I should have loaded up with more duck.

Rice AND porridge! Which explains why I took less rice than usual.

During my downtime at work, I studied Korean via the government's immigrant integration program, because that was the only place in my town where I could get Korean lessons.
This is me studying a Korean history chapter during my free time at work, along with oddly-titled Pepero Nude chocolates - because the biscuit was on the outside instead of the inside.
