a journal of staff meals

In Indonesia, the caterers at my job are hired guns; they aren't actually part of the company. This means that they are very interested in maximising their profits from whatever it is that the company pays them. This means that sometimes you can taste the pinch of the budget. Anyway. They put out their food menu at the end of the month, and then you order all of your food for next month. This means that most of the the time at lunch, I no longer remember what I ordered at the end of last month.

Food can be hit or miss. The DIY salad bar is pretty much the only consistent dish. For everything else, you never really know if you're going to get what you expect.

A mix of items on the first day of work. The menu has not been released yet, so everyone gets a random mix of things.

Chicken rendang, supposedly. To which I say: WHERE!? The chicken was floating in watery liquid when it was served. Watery rendang!?

Nasi kuning. Local dishes are usually done well, the key word being USUALLY (exhibit A: chicken rendang)

Indian butter chicken. This is a reliable dish, but not always! The one in this photo is a good version; sometimes it's too watered-down.

Thai chicken with "cashew nuts" according to the menu, but it turned out to be just peanuts (cheaper!).

"Ayam taliwang". When I was lining up for this, another employee next to me said, "That is NOT ayam taliwang!"

Bakmi ayam. This is pretty good, but the serving is tiny. I added a bunch of the free crackers that are always available. Still hungry afterwards!

Chicken schnitzel. This took a long time to line up for, because the cafeteria workers were picking up the schnitzel pieces one-by-one instead of scooping up a few at a time.

Tempeh katsu! This was all in one piece, so the line went quickly! This is one of my favorite meals at work, and every now and then I find myself thinking about it.

Salad bar. The rest of the food may be hit or miss, but the salad bar is always consistent! Sure, it's always the same choices every day at the salad bar, but at least you know exactly what you're getting. Very popular with the ladies.

Grilled chicken. Where's the grill marks!?

Gado-gado. This is really good, but rarely appears on the menu. You can also see where I've managed to shove some fruit onto the same plate because I'm too lazy (embarrassed?) to carry two plates across the cafeteria.

Nasi campur. Just like gado-gado, nasi campur has a lot of components to it, and that's probably why it rarely appears on the menu. This one is great!
