Listen up!

...no?

I'm going to say something anyway!!1!!1!1!

Maybe I'm an Old Person™ but I remember when the internet used to be fun.

Once upon a time, there was a weird and unique internet, where you could stumble upon someone's digital shrine to their collection of ... I don't know ... toothpicks? You can still find these fun sites if you look.

And yet!! These days, the majority of the internet is trapped inside the walled gardens of sites like Instagram, TikTok, and X. These types of antisocial media are the reason why the internet isn't as fun anymore.

Make something that is fun and cool and yours. There is value in having an internet presence that belongs to you alone, and is fully controlled by you.

Oh, and try to update it regularly. 😅

Roll your own!

(these won't really belong to you either ... but it's a start)

neocities.org
for those of you who are willing to code html/css by hand, or (loud whisper) copy/paste it from somewhere else.
Go to neocities.org/browse to look at what other people have done with their sites.

nekoweb.org
Similar to neocities, but a smaller community

mmm.page
no coding knowledge required. it's like putting together a collage, because you just pick the elements and then place them wherever you want. So cool! I would have loved this as a teenager.
Note: the free account is limited to 5 pages.

straw.page
Similar to mmm.page but extremely simple (their words, not mine)

32bit.cafe
Active community that revolves around the indieweb. Their extensive resources list is something that I keep going back to.
